There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1 (NKJV)
Suggested reading: Romans 8:1-11
This verse is often misquoted, leaving out the condition that we live according to God’s will and not our own. That implies that there is condemnation for those who chose to live according to their fleshly desires, rather than to live according to God’s Word. The Holy Spirit always guides us to make godly choices, but we still have free wills and can ignore Him and the Lord’s will for our lives.
Being spiritually minded—and living according to the Holy Spirit’s directions—brings us life and peace. However, acting upon our own thoughts and desires causes negative, and often damaging, results and does not please our Most High God. There is so much joy in obeying the Lord in every area of our lives. Our godly choices are the proof that we love God and that we are one of His children.
Having a broken heart can be the result of making ungodly choices either because we did not know the Lord at the time, or because we chose to disobey Him. If our decisions contributed to our broken hearts, we should ask our loving, heavenly Father for forgiveness in Jesus’ name. The blood of Jesus will cleanse us from our sins if we have sincerely embraced Him as our Lord and Savior. Living according to the Spirit and not according to fleshly desires is the evidence that we have a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ as our Lord. We can receive healing for our broken hearts as we continue to live in Him!
