Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 (NKJV)

Walking through the valley of the shadow of death certainly describes an emotionally and spiritually painful time for anyone. However, the Lord promised to be with us always—at all times—and that promise helps us avoid being fearful. This includes times when circumstances are traumatic and break our hearts. If Jesus Christ is our personal Lord and Savior, He is with us during every heart-breaking situation to bring us comfort!
Rather than seeking comfort from the Lord, people often seek comfort from the wrong things. They may use alcohol, drugs, sex, food, entertainment, pornography, gambling, or other methods to try to find relief from the emotional pain they are suffering. Those things may temporarily numb the pain, but they eventually cause more misery. They are not God’s perfect plan for healing broken hearts.
True comfort comes from the Lord alone! He is the only One capable of filling our hearts and spirits with lasting comfort and healing. There is no substitute for God’s love and peace in our lives. Although Jesus often helps us on our healing journey through the compassion and love of others who love Him, it is ultimately His personal comfort that we require during our times in the valley of the shadow of death.
